Why It’s Important to Spotlight Your Team

A few years ago, while working at a former employer, something happened that I did not anticipate:  an announcement during a team meeting that I was being promoted.  Everyone on my team congratulated me – and that was great. Shortly thereafter, while perusing the latest issue of the company newsletter, an announcement about my promotion was included. (Though that was many moons ago, I still have the newsletter.) Although I already felt appreciated while working there, the experience also made me feel that my work was valued – that I was valued. I try to do my best in everything, but that experience inspired me to be committed even more to doing my best. I knew then that if I never experienced that feeling again in life, I would never forget it.

I think that one of the things that speaks volumes about the culture of a company is how its employees are treated. There is nothing like feeling that you are valued – not just as an employee, but – as a person. And, while bonus pay is great, the benefits associated with “being seen” by the organization that a person works for are many and, more than likely, those advantages that last longer than the paycheck.

Employee recognition works wonders for employees. Workers who feel that they and their talents are considered valuable will perform at their highest level in return. Because they feel appreciated, they are more than willing to do their best work. In today’s workplace (and largely due to the pandemic), many organizations are decentralized and employees work remotely from various locations around the country. Considering this, spotlighting employees is an ideal way to inspire them and make them feel connected to the company.

There are a variety of formats to choose from to highlight an employee. Some of these include:

  • Company newsletters

  • Blog posts (internal and public) and

  • Video recordings that feature images and different forms of media.

There are rewards that employers benefit from by valuing their employees in this way. Customers, such as myself, tend to patronize companies that we like. Organizations cannot go wrong when they spotlight employees for doing a good job or for any other noteworthy reason.  It’s a great look for the company…one that incentivizes existing and/or prospective customers to purchase its products or services.

Highlighted (or spotlighted) employees make happy employees. Tap into creating a company culture that is effective and engaging…one that everyone – employees, customers and the general public – will want to be a part of.
